The number behind the mission

Why 22?

Not just a number. A call to stand together.

Every life matters.

In its 2012 Suicide Data Report, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that approximately 22 veterans died by suicide each day. That historical estimate inspired our name and became a rallying cry for communities determined to help.

The number 22 is a reminder of lives lost, not a claim that today’s daily count is unchanged. Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community. Our mission remains the same: end veteran suicide.

Challenge 22 raises awareness and funds vetted nonprofit organizations helping veterans work through Post-Traumatic Stress. Veterans in our own community are still struggling, and they need people willing to stand beside them.

By walking, volunteering or giving, you help build a community where seeking support is a sign of strength and no veteran has to fight alone.
